The more RAM your computer has, the more programs it can run simultaneously without slowing down. That’s why upgrading RAM is one of the most common ways to improve a computer’s performance.

RAM is fast and temporary, meaning that once you turn off your computer, all the data stored in RAM is erased.

A pendrive (also called a USB flash drive) is a small, portable storage device that connects to your computer via the USB port. Pendrives are commonly used to transfer files between computers or to back up important data. 

Unlike RAM, which is designed for high-speed data access, pendrives are built for long-term storage. They are slower and not designed for the fast-paced tasks that RAM handles.

Can You Use a Pendrive as RAM?

Now, the big question: can a pendrive be used as RAM? The short answer is no, not in the way you might expect. RAM and a pendrive serve different purposes in a computer, and each has its own set of characteristics. However, there is a way to make a pendrive function somewhat like RAM, but it comes with limitations.

Virtual Memory and ReadyBoost

While a USB pendrive can’t fully replace RAM, there’s a feature built into some operating systems, particularly Windows, that allows you to use a pendrive as additional memory—called virtual memory or ReadyBoost.

Virtual memory is a feature that lets your computer use a portion of your hard drive or storage device to simulate extra RAM. In this setup, when your computer runs out of physical RAM, it will move some of the data to the hard drive or another storage device to free up space for active processes. 

Although this increases the amount of available memory, it’s much slower than actual RAM because hard drives and pendrives have slower read and write speeds compared to RAM.

To set this up on a Windows computer, you can adjust your system settings to allow it to use the pendrive as part of virtual memory. Here’s how it works:

  1. Plug in your pendrive.

  2. Go to Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced System Settings.

  3. Under the Performance section, click Settings.

  4. In the Performance Options window, go to the Advanced tab and click on Virtual Memory.

  5. Here, you can select your pendrive to be used for additional memory.

However, keep in mind that this method is only a workaround, and it doesn't actually increase the speed of your computer’s RAM. It just allows your computer to use the storage on the pendrive when it runs low on physical memory. The performance will still be much slower compared to using physical RAM.

ReadyBoost

Another feature that can use a pendrive as "virtual RAM" is ReadyBoost. This feature is specific to Windows and allows you to use a USB device to improve system performance, especially on computers with low RAM. 

ReadyBoost works by caching frequently used files from the hard drive to the USB drive, making them faster to access. While it doesn’t directly increase your system's RAM, it can improve overall system performance, particularly when using slower hard drives.

To use ReadyBoost:

  1. Insert your pendrive into the USB port.

  2. When the “AutoPlay” window pops up, select Speed up my system.

  3. Choose the amount of space you want to allocate to ReadyBoost.

Again, while ReadyBoost can provide some performance boost, it’s important to note that it doesn’t replace RAM. It’s more of a way to improve the speed of data access, particularly for systems with slower hard drives.

Why You Can’t Fully Use a Pendrive as RAM

Even with these features, a pendrive cannot fully replace RAM for several key reasons:

  1. Speed: RAM is designed to be extremely fast, allowing your computer to access and process data quickly. Pendrives, on the other hand, are much slower. Even if you use a high-speed USB 3.0 pendrive, it will still lag behind RAM in terms of speed.

  2. Temporary Data: RAM is volatile, which means it only stores data while your computer is on. Pendrives are designed for storage and can handle larger files, but they are not intended to deal with the high-speed, real-time data that RAM does.

  3. Capacity: The amount of RAM in your system is typically much larger than the capacity of a standard pendrive. While you can use a pendrive as virtual memory, it won’t provide the same performance boost that additional physical RAM would offer.

  4. Wear and Tear: Pendrives are not designed for the kind of continuous reading and writing that happens when acting as memory. Using a pendrive for virtual memory could lead to faster wear and eventual failure.

When Should You Use a Pendrive for Virtual Memory?
